4th Grade Beginning Band students with no past musical experience may choose to learn the flute, clarinet, trumpet, or percussion kit (snare drum or practice pad, AND bells).  Students wishing to learn the Alto Saxophone or the Bass Clarinet must take a full year of Clarinet in order to be eligible to learn these instruments in 5th Grade Beginning Band.  Students wishing to learn the Trombone must take a full year of Trumpet in order to learn this instrument in 5th Grade Beginning Band.

5th Grade Beginning Band students with no past musical experience may choose to learn the flute, clarinet, trumpet, or percussion kit (snare drum or practice pad, AND bells).  Students with one full year of clarinet experience are eligible to learn the Alto Saxophone or the Bass Clarinet.  Students with one full year of trumpet experience are eligible to learn the Trombone.

Advanced Band consists mostly of 5th grade students who have completed one full year of Beginning Band in 4th grade and are continuing with their same instrument.  However, any 4th or 5th grade student can audition on ANY Band Instrument (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Baritone, Tuba, Percussion) if he/she demonstrates the skills of a second-year Band Student.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

All Band students will receive two 30-minute lessons per week and must make up any classroom work that they have missed during the lesson.  Because students will be missing class, eligibility is dependant upon classroom teacher approval.

Unless you already own one, you will need to rent a musical instrument and purchase a book.  It is recommended that you contact one of the local music stores that have special rent-to-own programs.  Green Valley does have a limited number of instruments and books available for rent for no charge, but these should only be rented by those who are truly in need of financial assistance.

For a method book, all Band classes use Essential Elements 2000, Book One.  Below is partial list of available music outlets in the area.  Please carefully consider renting or purchasing a musical instrument and book from a dedicated music retailer (below) and not a general merchandiser (ie. Costco, Sam’s Club, etc).
